Almost everyone climbs Mount Batur in the dark. You don't have to. The sunset trek uses the same trail, the same Kintamani guides and the same rate as the sunrise climb, but you set off in the afternoon, see the caldera around you the whole way up, and watch the light fall across Lake Batur from the top. Then you come down under headlamps with your guide leading the way.

How the afternoon runs

Pickup and briefing
We collect you from your hotel in the Kintamani area and drive to the trailhead, where you meet the local guide who will walk with you all the way up and back down.

The climb, in daylight
The same 1.5 to 2 hour route as the sunrise trek, on a well-trodden trail with steep sections of loose volcanic gravel. The difference is that you can see it. The caldera, the lake and the villages open up below you as you gain height.

Sunset from 1,717 m
From the summit the sun drops away to the west while Mount Abang and Mount Agung hold the last of the light on the other side. It is the same view as the famous sunrise, lit from the opposite direction and with a fraction of the crowd.

Descent by headlamp
Your guide leads the way down with headlamps, which we provide. This is the part where having a guide who walks this mountain constantly stops being a nice extra and starts being the point.

What time does the sunset trek start?
It is timed backwards from that day's sunset so you reach the summit with time to settle in, which means the pickup shifts through the year. Tell us your date on WhatsApp and we'll give you the exact time rather than a guess.
Is the sunset trek the same price as the sunrise one?
Yes, IDR 550,000 per person, the same as the sunrise climb. It covers your local guide, the entrance ticket, headlamp, water, photo documentation and hotel pickup and drop-off in the Kintamani area.
Is coming down in the dark safe?
It is the same trail thousands of people descend every morning, and your guide leads it with headlamps that we provide. If anything, descending in the dark is the easier half, because you have already walked the route in daylight on the way up.
Sunrise or sunset, which should I pick?
Pick sunrise for the classic sea of clouds and breakfast at the top, if a 3AM pickup doesn't bother you. Pick sunset for warmer air, a trail you can actually see, far fewer people, and an evening you can build the rest of your day around.
Do you run the sunset trek every day?
Message us with the date you have in mind and we'll confirm straight away. Mountain weather matters more in the afternoon than at dawn, so we will also tell you honestly if your date looks poor and suggest a better one.
Can you pick me up from Ubud or the south?
Yes. Pickup inside the Kintamani area is included; from Ubud, Canggu, Seminyak, Sanur, Denpasar and the south we arrange the transfer and confirm it with you first. An afternoon start makes the drive far more pleasant than the 2AM version.
