Guests on a jeep roof above Lake Batur in the soft light of early morning

Down to the water

The caldera lake, and the temple on it

Lake Batur sits in the floor of the caldera, the largest lake in Bali, held in by the walls of an old eruption and fed by springs rather than rivers. Villages line its shore, fishing boats work it at dawn, and a temple stands at the water's edge. It is the stop that turns a sunrise viewpoint into an actual look at how people live inside this volcano.

  • Travellers who want culture as well as a view
  • Guests who prefer a calmer, slower stop
  • Photographers shooting reflections at first light
  • Anyone combining Kintamani with a lake day

What this route adds

  1. Sunrise viewpoint first

The morning still opens the same way, with the jeep climbing to a viewpoint over Mount Batur and the lake for first light, and breakfast while you watch it.

  2. Down to Lake Batur

The jeep drops into the caldera towards the water. Seeing the lake from its own shore, with the caldera wall standing above you, is a completely different experience from looking down at it from the rim.

  3. The floating temple

The temple at the water's edge is one of the four stops on our jeep route, and it is the quiet one. Dress respectfully, as you would at any Balinese temple, and your driver-guide will tell you how to behave at the site.

  4. Back before the day gets hot

You are dropped back at your hotel between 08:30 and 10:00, with the rest of the day still ahead of you. Most guests use it for the hot springs or a slow lunch somewhere on the rim.

Questions

What guests ask about this one

Which temple does the jeep route visit?

It is the floating temple on Lake Batur, one of the four stops our drivers run. Message us on WhatsApp before you book and we'll send you photos of the exact stop so you know precisely what you are getting.

Do I need to cover up for the temple?

Dress as you would for any Balinese temple: shoulders and knees covered. It is cool in the caldera before sunrise anyway, so the jacket and long trousers you'll already be wearing usually do the job.

Can we swim or take a boat on Lake Batur?

That is not part of this tour. Our jeep route brings you to the lake and the temple, and we are happy to point you towards what else is possible around the lake on your own time. Ask us on WhatsApp and we'll be straight with you.

Is the lake stop instead of the sunrise, or as well as?

As well as, if you want both. Your booking covers up to two of the four stops, so the sunrise point plus the temple is a standard pairing at no extra cost. All four stops together is IDR 200,000 more.

How much does it cost?

IDR 550,000 per person, or IDR 750,000 for a private jeep holding up to 3 people. That covers your driver-guide, the entrance ticket, breakfast, water, photo documentation and hotel pickup in the Kintamani area.

What time are we back at the hotel?

Between about 08:30 and 10:00, depending on where you are staying. Pickup is around 03:30 from the Kintamani area, and we confirm your exact times on WhatsApp once we know your hotel.

Shall we hold a date for you?

Tell us when you're in Bali and how many of you there are. We reply on WhatsApp with availability, the exact total, and your pickup time. No deposit to ask.
