The volcanic floor

Drive across the volcano's own debris

Most Mount Batur photos are taken looking at the mountain. This part of the jeep route puts you on it. Past eruptions left broad fields of hardened black lava and deep black volcanic sand across the caldera floor, and a 4WD jeep is the only comfortable way to cross them. It is a landscape that looks nothing like the rest of Bali, and it comes after the sunrise viewpoint on the same morning.

  • Photographers after a landscape nobody expects
  • Travellers who want the volcano, not the climb
  • Families and couples
  • Anyone bored of rice terraces and beach clubs

The stops on this route

  1. Sunrise viewpoint

The jeep starts the morning at a viewpoint over Mount Batur, Lake Batur and the mountains behind, with breakfast while the light comes up. No walking is involved in getting there.

  2. The black lava field

Rock left behind by past eruptions, cooled into a jagged black plain that runs across the caldera floor. Your driver knows the tracks through it and where the light falls best for photographs.

  3. The black sand area

Fine volcanic sand, dark enough to make everything on it stand out, with the mountain rising behind. This is the stop most guests end up using for their photos of the morning.

  4. Photo documentation, included

Your driver-guide takes the photos at each stop, so you are in them instead of behind the camera. It is part of the price on every jeep booking, not an upsell at the end.

Worth knowing

The full route options are the sunrise point, the black lava, the black sand and the floating temple on Lake Batur. Your booking covers up to two spots, and adding all of them costs IDR 200,000 more. Tell us which ones matter most and we'll build the morning around them.

Questions

What guests ask about this one

What exactly is the black lava field?

It is the hardened lava left across the caldera floor by Mount Batur's past eruptions. Instead of looking at the volcano from a distance, you drive out onto the ground its eruptions created, which is why a 4WD is needed rather than a car.

Can we see the sunrise, the lava and the sand in one morning?

Your booking includes up to two of the four route spots, and visiting all of them costs IDR 200,000 extra. Most guests take the sunrise point plus one of the volcanic stops, so tell us your priority on WhatsApp and we'll plan it with you.

Is there any hiking on this tour?

None. The jeep takes you to every stop and you walk only as far as you feel like walking once you are there. It suits children, older travellers and anyone who would rather not climb a volcano at 4AM.

What should I wear for the lava and sand stops?

Closed shoes you don't mind getting dusty, and a light jacket for the pre-dawn start, because the caldera is cool before the sun is properly up. The ground is uneven at the lava field, so save the sandals for later in the day.

How much does it cost?

IDR 550,000 per person, or IDR 750,000 for a private jeep holding up to 3 people. Driver-guide, entrance ticket, breakfast, water, photo documentation and Kintamani-area hotel pickup are included.

Is the jeep open-top?

We run classic 4WD jeeps suited to this terrain, and the photo stops are built around them. If you have a preference, mention it on WhatsApp when you book and we'll tell you what we can do for your date.

Shall we hold a date for you?

Tell us when you're in Bali and how many of you there are. We reply on WhatsApp with availability, the exact total, and your pickup time. No deposit to ask.
